What a FANTASTIC start to the year!!!!

Parents and Students-

Let me start off by saying how PROUD I am to serve you in my role as principal.  It is truly an honor to work with all the outstanding young leaders we have in our building.  The year has started out very well and students have reported to school with high expectations and goals for themselves.  Please feel free to contact the school (616-361-7396) with any questions that you may have.

I would like to take a moment to explain our Math/Reading Intervention Lab.  This is a school wide initiative that makes up our scheduled second hour of the day.  All students are assigned into this class as part of their daily schedule.   The implementation of this class allows for remediation of core academic skills, as well as an  opportunity to prepare for the MME (Michigan Merit Exam) for those scheduled to take this test.  This test is mandatory for all juniors (and seniors who have not received a valid score) and will be held on the following dates:  March 4th., 5th., and 6th. of 2014.  More information will follow as we near this date.

Goal of Program:  The math/reading lab is designed to provide building-wide targeted content specific interventions and instructional support for all students at all ability levels.  The students will rotate on an “A/B” schedule, with Monday/Tuesday being the “A” days and Wednesday/Thursday being the “B” days.  This targeted instruction will take place within the first 30 min. of class.   The remaining 20 minutes of the class will be dedicated to Sustained Silent Reading for both the “A/B” days (students will SSR for 20 min. daily Monday-Thurday).

Every Friday will be an “Ed Connect” day.  The purpose/goal of this will be two fold:

1.                            The teacher of record for that hour will be responsible for meeting with 7-8 students per week to review grades, academic progress, and establish a positive student-teacher relationship.  This will ensure that every student will have individualized connections with a teacher to provide individualized academic support, foster a positive student-teacher relationship, and make contact with parents/guardians when needed.

2.                            The students that are not actively engaged with the teacher will have the following options:

a.       Opportunity to make-up any missing work for the week

b.      Opportunity to utilize the Credit Recovery program

c.       Silent Reading

*               Writing Prompts and any other assessments/activities tied to the SIP (School Improvement Plan) will be held during this time.
